Catherine Alicada Smith is a third-year law student at the University of Ottawa. Her particular areas of interest are alternative dispute resolution and intellectual property law. She looks forward to enhancing her knowledge on military law and access to information and privacy law.
Having obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with distinction, Ms. Smith pursued a year of independent study in political science in preparation for pursuing a degree in law. She has had the opportunity of working with lawyers in a variety of milieus. Her first exposure was as adjointe politique in the office of a Quebec cabinet minister, herself a lawyer. Ms. Smith practiced tact, diplomacy and problem solving daily to find solutions to the problems of constituents in the riding. As an intern at the United Nations Secretariat for the Convention on Biological Diversity, she prepared case summaries pertaining to intellectual property and environmental issues for the legal department. She also created a guideline manual for developing nations in the field of Biosafety, as well as involving and informing youth about biodiversity on Facebook.
Under Colonel Drapeau’s guidance, Ms. Smith conducts legal research for litigation; aids in the production of legal manuals and teachings; and assists with general administration. She looks forward to learning from and contributing to this vibrant law office. |
